FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is Montalcino, and what makes it special?

Montalcino is located in the heart of Tuscany, about 40 km south of Siena. It is celebrated for its rolling hills, medieval charm, and, most importantly, its world-famous Brunello wine. With breathtaking landscapes and rich traditions, the town has become a destination for wine lovers and history enthusiasts alike.

What are the key cultural events and festivals in Montalcino?

The Sagra del Tordo (Festival of the Thrush) is held every October, celebrating medieval traditions with archery contests, costumed parades, and feasts featuring local food and wine. The Benvenuto Brunello and Red Montalcino events brings winemakers and enthusiasts together for exclusive tastings and previews of upcoming vintages among other events.

How does Brunello di Montalcino differ from Rosso di Montalcino?

Brunello is more intense, complex, and meant for long aging, with flavors evolving over time. Rosso di Montalcino is vibrant, youthful, and perfect for casual drinking, offering fresh red fruit notes and softer tannins.

What are the best times of year to visit for wine lovers?

Spring and autumn are ideal, with mild temperatures and lush landscapes. Visiting during harvest season (September-October) offers a firsthand look at the winemaking process in action.

What is the process of making Brunello di Montalcino

Brunello is crafted exclusively from Sangiovese grapes and must age for a minimum of five years before release—two years in oak barrels, followed by bottle aging. Some producers extend aging beyond the legal requirement to produce highly refined wines with deeper structure.
